These diamonds, as defined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), are small diamonds weighing between 3 to 8 cents. They are popularly placed in the Pave Setting around the centre stone or on the band a ring or bracelet.

Star diamonds are small diamonds which weigh less than 3 cents. They are smaller to melee diamonds and are used to accentuate other gemstones.

If you total the number of carats; stars are the highest selling stones when it comes to loose diamond trading. The reason being that  these are used as accented stones in micro jewelry and even in watch-making. Their size range begings mostly from 0.005 carats. The fast running sizes are between 0.01 and 0.03 Carat.

They may also be useful for colors that are deeper but not as bright, as you might find in emeralds, rubies, and sapphires.

Owing to their small size and practical use as accents for the main diamond, they are often sold in batches of 100.
